“The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential… these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence.” – Confusious
I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “Life is like a rollercoaster..” It’s a bit cliche, but it is true! It’s like the perfect way to describe reality, life. Life is full of negativity and positivity. Everyday, we are embarking upon a journey where anything and everything can happen. Life happens when we least expect it. So we make the most of this life, and what we have in it. We strive to be successful, to dream big and live those dreams out. So, when life happens, how do we stay motivated? What keeps us going when we feels as if we’ve hit a road block?
5 Steps to Staying Motivated:
1. Clear your mind of “Can’t”
In my last blog, I talked about how anything is possible. Anything is possible! So whenever you feel like something is impossible, you have to tell yourself that it is possible. Anything the human mind can possible think of is possible. Anything that God does not want us to know, he won’t allow even the next Einstein to figure it out. Clear your mind of can’t. Yes, it’s easier said than done. So, whenever negativity infiltrates your mind, you have to repeatedly tell yourself you can do it, it can be done, anything and everything is possible. You have to keep telling yourself that, until you believe it.
Sometimes we can fool our own selves into believing lies about what is possible and what isn’t. Many lose self confidence because they have been deceived into failure. The only way to correct this, and get back on the road to success, is to change your mind-set. Your way of thinking has to change. Learn to think positive, all of the time, even if it annoys other people. Clear your mind of “Can’t” because you can!
2. Keep the Fire Burning
In other words, keep the passion alive! Whatever it is that you are striving to accomplish, one of the easiest ways to stay motivated, is to develop a passion for that thing. Let’s face it, we are not going to be passionate about everything we set out to do in this life. Most of us have that one thing that we love to do, and for some, that is our career or hobby. But, even if it’s not something like that, we must be passionate. How do we do that? By creating a reason to be passionate. What is your goal? Why do you want to accomplish that goal? What will happen, how will you feel once you accomplish that goal? The answers to those questions is the reason right there.
If there is something that you are already passionate about, stay motivated. Keep the fire burning. Don’t let it die out when things get tough. I can speak from experience on this. Recently, I have struggled with staying passionate about… well, my passion! I absolutely love spoken word poetry/slam poetry. I love to perform, sing and write. There was a time where I had plenty of ongoing opportunities to write and perform and to be around others who shared the same passion. That helped keep the fire burning in my life. But then, there came a time when things slowed down. Being a full-time college student, working, and maintaining my spiritual life became my life. I didn’t have much time for anything else. There was no focusing on my social life, love life or my passion… poetry and music.
Now, things have began to pick up slowly. I am now on summer break, and am working 1 job instead of 2. I have plenty of time to write and search for opportunities to perform. However, it was a challenge for me to jump right back into the swing of things. It took time to rekindle the fire which had faded over time. It faded, because I was not involved. So, to rekindle the fire, I had to surround myself with people who were passionate about performance poetry. I had to purposefully search for inspiration, something to write about. Something that would come natural and easy, that I would not have to force, but instead, enable me to enjoy the ride. I had to get motivated and inspired all over again. That is the very reason behind starting this blog. I knew that I had to start writing again.. even if it’s not poetry. I have to keep going.
What I learned from that experience is that I must stay motivated. I must stay passionate when things slow down. Things won’t always be run and gun. Sometimes you have to stop and reflect on the past to be prepared for the future. So no matter what happens, what derails you, or what becomes a stumbling block, keeping you from reaching your dreams… don’t let the fire burn out.
1. Search for inspiration
2. Find time to do what you love. Sacrifice.
3. Surround yourself with success-minded, passionate individuals who will build you up, not tear you down.
3. Breakthrough! Do something.
There will be times when you feel like doing nothing. Where you feel like you just can’t go a step further. Guess what? In most scenarios, it is just a feeling. Push past those feelings. Take a leap of faith so that you don’t end up with regrets. Like me, I am keeping of with this blog writing. It’s not exactly writing and performing poetry. But it’s something nonetheless, to keep me active.
4. Encourage Yourself
We all need encouragement at some point and time. Reality is, we can’t always rely on other people to pick us up when we fall. Each time we fall, we gain strength. You are strong enough. You just have to believe in yourself. Sometimes, you just have to TRUST yourself. So don’t count it selfish to take time for yourself, to meet your needs, to focus on you. Whatever you do, encourage yourself! We can’t always look for someone else to do that. If nobody else encourages you to keep on going and to never give up… Well, just don’t let yourself down. You don’t have anything to prove to anyone but yourself that you can do anything and everything if you put your mind to it. Those other people, including haters, they will witness your success with their own eyes. Don’t focus on them. Encourage yourself. Stay motivated.
5. Enjoy the Ride
It’s easy to get caught up in the end goal. Instead of focusing completely on the final outcome, we should enjoy the ride. Take nothing for granted. Accept opportunities. Learn from your mistakes. Embrace your flaws and imperfections. Cherish the small things. Just sit back and enjoy the ride!
“Learn from the past, set vivid, detailed goals for the future, and live in the only moment of time over which you have any control: now.” – Denis Waitley
