Innovation vs. Imagination

“Imagination is the realm of the mind where you see things that do not yet exist in this world, but which one day might. It is an under-appreciated yet critical element of creativity and innovation.”

– Jeffrey Paul Baumgartner  (JPB.com)

I can’t help but dream big. It’s what I do best. When creating something new, I like to do it like it’s never been done before. I don’t want any lingering thoughts of a previous creation distracting from the new thing. The next big thing is always my agenda. How to do it bigger, better, faster, stronger.. I guess, my brain is wired as a reflection of the way our world is run, technology driven. Everything escalating faster than some minds can comprehend. New inventions and new ideas are coming into play. Changing our world for better or for worst? I’ll let someone else debate about that.

Imagination is the beginning of any innovation. Do you agree? (Please comment, I’d love to hear your opinions & ideas about this). When we dream big, we allow our minds to create diversity, things that have never been seen or done before.

Yesterday, someone suggested to me, that I should start my own Inspirational-Poetry Open Mic. That has been my hearts desire for awhile now, since I have not been able to find one in the Valley of the Sun.  Last month, I hosted my first Open Mic Night, where music, poetry, art, comedy, dance, etc. was welcome. However, I was the only poet. For so long, I have dreamed of having the opportunity to perform my inspirational poetry and to engage other young music/poet artists as well.

I dream of one day reaching out to the younger generation with music/writing talent. To minister to them, to build them up in the right way, so that they can use their talent and skill for something good, rather than money and fame. I want to start my own Poetry Open Mic and I want it to grow.  I want to inspire and motivate people, of all ages, to be the best that they can be. To take whatever passion and dream they have, to give it back to God, and trust him to take them to the top. That is what I want to do. I am still waiting for this dream to come true.

With all my heart, I want to create something new for myself and the people around me. I want it to be something that people never get tired of. I want a different theme at each event, etc. My imagination runs wild whenever I think about the possibilities. I feel that I am equipped for it, nonetheless, I am afraid to take the next step. I say the next step, rather than the first step, because I believe the first step is to have a dream, followed by a passion to pursue that dream. That’s the one thing you will be able to fall back on when the road gets tough. That passion will always remind you of why you began the journey in the first place.

Fear is often the stumbling block that hinders many people from achieving success, accomplishing their goals and living their dreams. In fact, fear is what keeps many people from taking the first, necessary step. My fear, is rejection, and moving too soon. I’m the type of person, I embrace the fact that I make mistakes and I do my best to learn from them. Still, I like things to be done professionally, in the right manner. I don’t like things done half way. I hold myself accountable to my actions. I am driven, but I do put a lot of pressure on myself. So how do I overcome fear? How do I overcome.. myself?

Like Nike Says, Just do it! I believe that’s what you have to do. Just step out on faith. You don’t need a lot of faith, you just need a enough to help you take that first step. Check this out, “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things.. what? Not seen”(Hebrews 11:1, KJV). And according to Jeffrey Paul Baumgartner, “Imagination is the realm of the mind where you see things that do not yet exist..” Therefore, you must need to have some  sort of faith to even conjure the thought of innovating, creating something new into existence. For me, imagination, innovation and faith all work together. Of course, I come from a more spiritual rather than an atheistic or scientific background, but nevertheless, I think you have to have a balance of both, because I believe that we are both physical and spiritual beings in one. That’s just my personal belief though, I realize not everyone believes that way.

Sooo… Don’t be afraid to dream big. There is no shame in coloring outside the lines. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box! I mean, if you take a look at fashion trends,  technology,  science, religion, politics, music… life/culture itself promotes thinking outside the box. Innovation and imagination is in it’s prime. So take hold of your dreams at the reigns and design your dream life. Don’t forget about reality though… Keep the balance! I will do the same. And, I will be sure to post an update about my taking the necessary leap of faith to make my dream come true.. when the time comes.
